PROGRAM SUMMARY

Every April, Trees Across Colorado (TAC), a program of the Colorado Tree Coalition (CTC), provides low-cost deciduous trees five to ten feet tall to groups across Colorado. Over the last twenty-two years, more than thirty thousand trees have been planted in Colorado communities. TAC offers town foresters, homeowners associations, and community “tree huggers” the opportunity to promote the value of trees and a diverse urban forest within their communities as well as proper tree selection, planting and maintenance techniques.

The size, price, and weight of the trees encourages volunteer community members to plant their own trees, enhancing their community forest with a selection of trees promoting drought tolerance and diversity. Groups order their trees in the fall for delivery in April, picking them up on a weekday (usually Thursday) as they are unloaded at drop sites usually in Windsor, Arvada, Lakewood and Littleton.

Most of the trees are about an inch in caliper and grown in #7 air-pruning pots that foster dense root systems without root girdling.  These trees lose many fewer roots when prepared for transport and establish more quickly than conventional container grown or balled and burlapped trees. Some slower growing trees like Gingko and Horsechestnut come in #15 pots. Other varieties that transplant well in bare root form are available in bundles of 5.

Cost including shipping range from $50-$120 per tree, depending on size. Volunteer time and bulk purchasing keeps tree prices low. A slight mark-up from the wholesale price benefits the Colorado Tree Coalition, a state-wide non-profit tree advocacy group, for their grants program, educational workshops and other CTC programs.

Tree selection in prior years included Chinkapin, English, Swamp White, Shumard, and Bur Oak; Hackberry; Kentucky Coffeetree; Catalpa; Turkish Filbert; Boxelder; Amur Corktree; Hophornbeam; Linden; Elm; Treelilac; Eastern Redbud; Hedge, Rocky Mountain, Bigtooth, Tatarian and other Maples; Spring Snow Crabapple and many others. There are usually about 40 different varieties of trees from which to choose.

The TAC tree availability list and order form is sent out in late summer or early fall. Trees are assigned on a first-come first-served basis. Tree orders must be finalized by mid-December with the first ½ payment due in mid-January and the remainder in April when the trees arrive.
