top of page What is a Tree Worth? Historian and author Jill Jonnes (Eiffel’s Tower, Conquering Gotham and Empires of Light) provides a critical look
into the past and recent history of urban tree initiatives. Jonnes takes the reader from the beginnings of Arbor Day in
1874 to the early '90s in Chicago as former Chicago Mayor Richard Daley sought to measure the value of urban forestry
through the Chicago Urban Forest Climate Project. More recent efforts in Los Angeles (Million Trees LA) and New York City
(Million Trees NYC) are taking advantage of what was learned through Chicago's experience. Indeed, Jonnes' points out
that trees offer a "low-tech solution" to many of the environmental ills man has wrought in urban America. Read Jonnes'
comprehensive look at the value of urban forestry in
The Wilson Quarterly.

CTC Poster Contest Announces Colorado Winner
This year’s poster theme was “Celebrate Trees in Our Community”. Colorado fifth graders from around the state
participated, with 44 schools submitting winning posters for the statewide judging event held on April 8th. The Colorado
Tree Coalition selected Jeneva Moreno’s poster as the winner of the 2011 Colorado Arbor Day Poster Contest!
Jeneva is from Doull Elementary in Denver. The posters of all forty-four school winners were displayed on the first floor
of the Colorado State Capitol from April 15th through April 21st and Jeneva was recognized at an event at the Capitol on
April 18th.
Scholarship Program The Colorado Tree Coalition (CTC) has a limited amount of funds to assist people with registering to attend
conferences and workshops throughout the year. Because of the limited dollars available it is required of all who
request assistance to follow these guidelines: Tour De Poudre On June 26th the International Society of Arboriculture-Rocky Mountain Chapter (ISA/RMC) and the Colorado Tree
Coalition (CTC) will be teaming up to co-host the 12th annual Champion Tree Classic Tour de Poudre, a bike ride to raise
money for tree planting and tree research. This year's ride will once again take place in northern Colorado with a short
and long route being mapped out between Fort Collins to Greeley along the Poudre River Trail. The New Belgium Brewing
Company in Fort Collins will help sponsor the ride again this year with the circuit routes starting and ending at that
location. For more information and to register click on the link below to take you to the CTC website.
Colorado Public TV/Channel 12 Partners with CTC The month of April brought a new partnership with Colorado Public TV Channel 12 (CPT12). In honor of Earth Day and
Arbor Day, CPT12 took another green step forward by partnering with CTC to help raise awareness of the ReForest Colorado
program. For every $40 donation in April, $5 in funds went to the ReForest Colorado program to help plant trees in
communities devastated by natural disasters. For more information and to donate by the end of April
